It is very important to be aware of summer heat. Temperatures of 85 degrees or more without the following components can be fatal to rabbits. The angoras wool is a lot warmer than sheep, therefore, it is imperative that they have adequate shade, ventilation, water, and food.
It is important to remember that rabbits are affected by temperature changes and weather. In summer, the angora needs extra care to insure that is does not suffer heat stress. If you have outdoor cages or your rabbitry shed does not have a fan or air conditioner, it is best to fully clip the coat off to make it bearable for the rabbit. Make sure the cages are placed away from direct sunlight in a well ventilated area.
If you plan to have your rabbits in show coat, it is strictly recommended that you get a commercial fan and an air conditioner or swamp cooler. I've heard that misters are also great to lower temperatures in the rabbitry shed.Make sure your rabbit has lots of water and maybe a frozen water bottle for the rabbit to lay next to. Make sure your rabbit has food and hay to eat and some toys to entertain itself.
Overall, keep an eye on the daily or weekly temperatures. Keep a weather thermometer in your shed, utilize your local news and or Internet to keep abreast with the weather and keepa vigilant eye on your rabbits. At the first sign of heat exhaustion take the rabbits inside a cool area, spray some water on their ears, give them water to drink and keep them alert. If the rabbit is not responsive take him/her to the Veterinarian immediately before it is too late.Keep an eye on your shed or any outside area where your rabbits reside.
Remember to be vigilant as one can never be too careful with your rabbits health!
