Satin Angora Breed

Since there are several breeds of Angora rabbits I am taking the time to list them all so that one can make the best choice for breeding and showing these awesome creatures. The Satin angora is a beautiful rabbit with breathtaking shiny coat. It is medium size and can weigh up between 8-9lbs. This is a fairly recent breed recognized by ARBA and not many people are working with it. It is considered a rare breed, listed number four in the 2007 listing. To get more information on this particular list, you can visit Rabbitgeek site. Since not many people are breeding this awesome rabbit, it might be one that people here in Texas might decide to work with. The breed is very hardy, commercial size and excellent for both fiber and meat. There is one person I know of here in Texas that currently breeds the Satin Angoras. Her name is Christine O'Hara and her site can be found at SpinningStrawIntoGold. She has developed this breed to be resistant to the weather in Texas and is acclimating them successfully to the outside weather.

For more information on the Satin Angora, please read the following excerpts taken from the United Angora Rabbit Club and Wikipedia.

"Satin Angora : A beautiful bunny, very similar in size and overall look to the French Angora, the Satin Angora was developed by crossing a French Angora with a Satin rabbit. The result is a shiny, glass like fiber that reflects the light. Satin Angoras have a very fine diameter in wool, and due to that, require more grooming than a French Angora. I would recommend grooming a Satin at least twice a week. Satin Angoras usually have a smaller harvest of fiber, and grow wool slower than a French Angora. They still need a good amount of dedicated breeders to develop the breed further. Satin Angoras were developed fairly recently and also come in a wide variety of colors." Source: UARC

"The Satin Angora has no furnishings on face, ears, or feet. The Satin Angora’s wool is said to be stronger for spinning than other varieties of Angora." Source: Wikipedia
