News on Grand Champion Leg for RIS

As I browsed through the NARBC Winter 2011 Newsletter, under the Board of Directors meeting there is a section that talked about..."ARBA is considering awarding a Grand Champion Leg, for Reserve in Show..."

I decided to check the ARBA site, as I normally do and under the news section, this information was publised:

THE FOLLOWING REVISION TO THE ARBA SHOW RULES IS EFFECTIVE February 1, 2012:

Section 10. It shall be mandatory to select the Best Rabbit and/or Cavy in Show. All Best In Show animals shall be awarded a Grand Champion leg, provided all requirements are met. If they are selected at a show, ARBA Legs will be awarded for Reserve in Show, Best 4 Class or Best 6 Class provided the minimum requirements of 3 exhibitors and 5 animals are met.

This is good news for all ARBA members. Now, perhaps the NARBC will address giving bonus sweepstakes points for those who receive Reserve In Show placement.

A new beginning for Road To Angora Rabbitry

Blacklands Prairie RBA hosted a Double Open and Youth Shows Saturday, in Waxahachie, Texas, January 13 & 14, 2012.

Unfortunately, RTA could not attend. However, we wish all our friends lots of luck in the show, especially Sasha McPhearson, Dana Faber, and Kelly, whom are showing english and satin angoras!

New Look

I've been thinking so much about creating and updating my webpage. However, I decided to revamp my blog, instead. I am hoping to get back to blogging often, and not neglect it too much.

Tri-Loom Weaving

Decided to get my Tri-loom setup and do some weaving. I finished the weaving and now need to take it off the loom and see how it came out. I think I might have added too much tension to the weft, but we will see.

My good friends, John and Sasha, invited me to go eat with them at St. Elmos Steak House. It was fun, as we had good conversation and then we went for a walk sight-seeing. I was a bit tired, though, but really enjoyed the meal and walk.

I am making plans on building a new website, which I hope will be better than the previous one. In the mean time, I wanted to get a logo and I planned to still use my beautiful RTA Diego Rivera (rest in peace) rabbit picture. Thus far, this is what I got.

Problems with my postings, let me give this one a try

I've been having some problems with the postings I prepared ahead of time to be released daily. I still have some pictures of Indianapolis and Convention. I'll work on it tonight and see if I can get things to go through this time.

In the mean time, I've been in contact with my good friends, John & Sasha, about the show schedule plans. I am excited to hear that Kellyof "The Kelfla Project" has some nice rabbits to show. I am hoping that all of us can attend shows here in Texas, and out of State. It is always great to see new angora lovers that are willing to learn and enter the show circuit. One of our goals has always been to have a Texas Angora Rabbit Club, so who knows, maybe we will be able to get it going sometime in the future.

I do understand some people's hesitation to raise and show Angora rabbits in Texas due to the heat and humidity, but it is all worth it. Also, if one can slowly acclimate them to the Texas weather, they can tolerate the temperature some what, but of course, they always need a/c, fans, lots of water and lots of love and care.

With my family's new rabbit acquisition, I am hoping to re-establish our herd again. I have one doe left of my original herd. I am so fond of her since she is my hope to establish my own line with help of other excellent lines in the US. I am planning on breeding her this coming weekend, but need to check the weather to ensure all goes well.

Any who, I want to post the tentative show schedule our friends and us is:

Brokens and more brokens

The presentation of the Broken English and Broken Satin Angoras took place this year. Unfortunately, neither passed due to some debatable reasons. I believe in the Broken Satin Angoras there was an issue of whether a rabbit was copper or tort? On the English Angoras there was a question on the pedigree, to wit: the color "fawn", which according to the Judges, this cross would not create a Tort? Well, something to that effect, but my mind is still a bit hazzy as I am preparing postings on 11/3/11, after my long drive trip. A main issue that surfaced with the Broken English judging was that the Judges used an unauthorized ARBA genetics book, which was writted about Neatherland Drawf, to judge the genetics of the English Angoras.

There was a proper debate with the Judges, where experts in English Angora Genetics, Betty Chu and Candy Haezlen were present to give their expert opinions, but the judges wouldn't hear it, citing they had two Genetics Experts amongst them.

After the issue was addressed, there was a quick "get to work" on an appeal of the decision. As of this time, I do not know what happened to the appeal; however, I trust that the ARBA will look at this situation carefully, especially if ARBA Judges are not properly following the ARBA Standard of Perfection, and are utilizing different rabbit breeds books to judge rabbits. Let's hope for the best and see what develops.

Dana Faber, won BOS with her Satin Angora. She was SO excited and so was I. Dana has been really focusing on the Satin angoras, while her daughter and son in law, Sasha and John, focus on the English Angora. We've attended shows together, competed together, and had a wonderful fun time at Convention.

Dana also knitted a pair of soft, beautiful Satin Angora gloves. I really wish she had entered them in the skein/garment competition, I know she would have one top honors. She is quite a talented knitter and spinster.

I only have her picture, and will see if I can contact the other winners for pictures to post.

Pictures of the Angora Rabbit Judging

Judge Dick is excellent in judging Angoras. He took his time, referred to the Standard of Perfection, joked a lot with the public, and was as pleasant as a Judge can be. I did not take as many pictures as I would have liked, so I don't think I have all the angora breed pictures here. Truth is that I was beat on Sunday. I arrived to Indianapolis at 12:00am and checked in and slept by 1:00am and got up at 6:00am and rushed to the Fairgrounds. Plus, my back was hurting from the long drive. I did leave after the BOB was announced, but by then, I was moving like a zombie.

NARBC & UARC Booths

The NARBC and UARC booths were nicely decorated and had plenty of goodies for the raffle. Also, they proudly displayed the garments section of crafts made from angora wool. Candy had several of her very nice hand made items from angora wool.

Introducing my two new additions to Road To Angora Rabbitry

I was very fortunate to acquire two excellent REW rabbits. The buck is from Linda Cassella and the doe is from Margaret Bartold. I specifically asked for REW since I have always been partial to them, rather than color. I am hoping these two additions will enhance our rabbitry and gets us back on track to compete once again. I am hopeful that 2012 will bring us luck and lots of fun; well, that is, if the world doesn't end (grin).

Below are four pictures I took as soon as I returned home. The weather in San Antonio was in the 50's with possibility of freezing. It is nice and cold outside, compared to the horrendous heat. It was windy and I had a tough time taking pictures of the rabbits. I did my best to get them to pose, despite the wind, the fatigue they and I had, and took some pictures for my blog. They were placed into their new cages, given their water, feed, and a toy. I plan to clip them both soon and once acclimated to their surroundings, begin the breeding.

The BUCK: He did his best, poor baby, such a long wonderful coat, but full of static! I could swear I heard him curse at me for shocking him a few times.

The DOE: She was furious, of course, with the wind, being exhausted, and I wanted her to pose.

ARBA Convention 2011

I have neglected my blog for quite some time. In fact, the "Road To Angora" Website I had is no longer working, since I failed to keep up the fee for maintenance. Supposedly, the site was free, but $5.00 fee to upgrade and when I stopped the payments, the website collapsed. Well, i have to create a new one soon, but this will be done using my Dream Weaver software, once I learn to use it.

One of the reasons I had not kept up with my blog and web page was because of so many issues going on in our personal life. My mother's illness, my oldest son leaving the nest, work being hectic, my younger son being silly (no, he is good, but gives his teachers grief), and also, because I just was not really feeling the excitement to raise and show rabbits. Yes, after our situation that happened two years ago, things just were not the same.

However, I maintained contact with my "rabbit friends" and I am glad I did. Although I had one rabbit from my original stock, I managed to acquire a breeding pair that produced 2 nice rabbits, and I bought another one from my friends, John and Sasha. I kept up with them, but the heat this year was horrendous. There was no way we could compete in any show.

Well, I had, for the longest time wanted to attend the ARBA Convention, but something happened and I could not make it, but this year, all changed. I was able to go alone to Convention and I Loved it! Yes, the 20 hour driving trip each way was tough, but well worth it.

I am excited to say that I had the great pleasure of not only seeing my good friends, John & Sasha McPhearson, and Dana Faber, but had the pleasure of seeing my good friend Margaret Bartold, too. I finally had the pleasure of meeting Linda Cassella in person, and also met Marcus Rhoden, Janet Gruber, Candy Haenszel, Betty Chu, Jack Bailey & his wife, Joan Hastings, and many other awesome angora rabbit breeders.

I had the pleasure of seeing first hand the awesome angoras and how fierce the competition is at Convention. Breeders really put their best rabbits on the show table and carefully take their time to groom them, blow coats, and get them ready for the show. I also saw, unfortunately, the sad side of showing, where some breeders bring to show poorly maintained rabbits, which not only is offensive to a Judge, but a sad impression for angora breeders and non angora breeders.

Overall, I had a wonderful time! I was fortunate to bring back home 2 awesome angoras, one from Margaret Bartold and the other from Linda Cassella. Linda's buck will be the sire in my rabbitry and I do hope will begin strengthening and improving what I currently have. I plan to begin the breeding soon, now that the summer heat is dissipating. However, I do not know if I will be able to compete in next year's Convention in Kansas, which I definitely plan to attend.

I took several pictures of the Angora shows mainly and I will be working on some posts for the following days. I am exhausted, as I'm sure my rabbits are, too, after driving for 20 hours on my return home. However, I must say, I feel invigorated and excited to show once again and continue enjoying this hobby, which has always helped me relax and enjoy the fun and friendships I make at shows.

Okay, I have neglected my blog due to work and other family developments. However, today I just had to post and say, "Thank you, Jesus! We have some rain...finally!!!"

We've had a horrific dry spell and no rain at all. Last night, I woke up to hear the thunder and rain tink-tatter on my window. I rant outside to ensure the truck's windows were closed, which they were. I got drenched in water, but it was a huge blessing. I pray the rain continues, we need it desperately, and I know other states can do without it.

On a second topic, I have a horrible toothache. It started Monday, and it continues today. I look crappy, feel crappy, and I desperately need to see my dentist, but the only appt I have is set for tomorrow at 9:45am. Gosh, I hope I can last with this pain. :)

My son, John and I, went to Belton, Texas, for the Tx RBA Show. Since we did not show, we had time to visit with our friends, John, Sasha, and Dana. We had a wonderful time. Also, we picked up our new addition to our rabbitry. She is unamed, but is a Chocolate English Angora Doe from Sasha's Haven. We are SO excited to get this little cutie rambunctious bunny.

New Cages!

New Cages, finally! I've been quite slowly, but surely, updating our rabbitry equipment. I've coveted these cages from Kammalop Specialties Rabbit Supplies, for quite some time; however, I had no way of bringing them back from Kansas. Well, Dwight, came to Belton, Texas for the Lop Nationals and was gracious enough to bring them for me. I bought 9 holes, total, of 30X30X18. I am extremely happy with these cages. They are big for my rabbits, have big door, which will help me take out the rabbits without a fuss. They are 3 tiered, fully assembled and of excellent material. They come with the gray Duratrays. I cannot wait to place my bunnies in there. Now, I need to insulate the huge shed we have, place a few more electrical outlets, the new air conditioner unit, new doors, and voila! The shed will be ready to accommodate all my bunnies, right in time for the hot summer months! I will purchase more cages, soon, as my budget allows me to. Picture below is sideways:

Ugh! Allergies!

The weather in San Antonio, Tx, is horrible for allergy sufferers. The mold, mountain cedar, and Lord know what else in the air count is super high! I have been feeling stuffy, have congestion, and my eyes are dry as can be. I wonder if the pollen, mold, etc., affect the rabbits? My rabbits seem to be doing well, thus far, which is great since by the time I get home, I place a mask on my face to cover my nose and mouth, and go check up on them. Usually, John, my youngest son, has already fed and watered the rabbits--he is SO helpful when I'm ill--this helps me tremendously, as I just tend to get home, make supper, bathe and head to bed. I am able to hit my REM Sleep in a jiffy! I am glad that I clipped all my rabbits this past Sunday to prepare for breeding and due to the weather change. I'm glad they are all comfortable without their coats. Now, I just need to keep my spinning frenzy, but feeling ill does not let me do much. Okay, too much rambling. I need to get going...

On Saturday, we went to the SARBA Spring Show in Seguin, Texas. We had a wonderful time being around our friends. I was so excited to see so many angoras! There were the English--of course, and then the Satins, and even the French! I need to get some pictures this coming week, but suffice to say that the BOB in the Angoras were: Sasha McPherson -- BOB English Angora Dana -- BOB Satin Angora Linda Franke -- BOB French Angora It was a great show.

Weird Weather in Texas

We are not used to this time of cold weather in Texas. Yesterday, I came home to find the rabbits water bottles frozen. Also, Tres' water trough was frozen, too. We do not have water at home as well as some of our neighbors. I hope things get better soon. Below are some pictures of the freeze.

It has been such a long time since I've posted. There are so many things going on this new year that I can't make time to do things I want to do.

Last week, I was in Houston attending the Theraplay Training so that I can apply it at my current job. I returned home Friday evening and rushed to the Valley to visit my parents. My mother is doing great! Thank the Lord, she is walking with and without assistance with her walker. She is even going out to parties when invited. I just love seeing her back to her normal self, minus mobility issues and having to receive dyalisis treatment weekly. Non the less, she still has a zest for life and I just love her. My dad, well, he was admitted to the hospital 3 weeks ago for a urinary tract infection and since he has history of prostate cancer, it took him a while to recover. He is currently in a rehabilitation hospital where he is well taken care of and they are teaching him to walk and build his strength again. I feel bad for him, he is tired of being in the rehab hospital away from home. He is just a funny, grouchy old man. He hates exercising and always wants to be treated extra special. He throws temper tantrums often and when even when I visit him this weekend and told him he was getting ready to return home, well, he did not believe me and "told me off" in his own kind of way. Oh darn, I see him and I see myself in the future...hopefully, I will not turn into a grouch like him. LOL

Around our small ranch (homestead), things are quite tough. Who would've known that I would have to be mending fences, picking up so much poop from one horse and few rabbits, clearing some weed/brush and even burning it in a bon-fire type way. Gosh, so many things to do and I only have ONE acre! Thanks goodness I only have one acre. I actually wanted more, but I'm getting this reality check and I don't know. :) The boys help me a lot, but they do tend to rebel at times. I don't blame them, they have so much going on, too, with school, friends, and loafing around.

Rabbits, well. We've had a dry spell in breeding for quite some time. I was getting disenchanted about it, but I think--keeping fingers crossed--that two does might be pregnant! I hope so, because one of them is Ruffles, my beautiful English that has been baren for such a looooong time. On a sad news about rabbits, I lost my Opal doe that I had gotten from Margaret Bartold. This awesome doe gave me 2 nice rabbits, a buck and doe. I hope I can build up soon and begin showing and competing. It is hard when rabbits don't produce. We will see.

Well, enough for now, too much writing cramped my fingers. lol

I knitting this toque for Martin. It took a while since I used 2 yarn colors. I didn't like the way it came out, but Martin loved it! Well, that is what he said. I plan to knit another one, but a bit longer this time and wider. However, I need to be prepared for 3 hours work, which I don't really have since I need to knit a toque for Johnny and then finish some scarves to give out as gifts for Christmas.

A UFO near Dallas?

Lately, so many things have been going on that I hardly have time to post--well, I hardly MAKE time to post.

Things are going well and I finally got my pictures from our SARBA October show in Seguin, Texas. I am adding the pictures of the BOB winners in the Angora rabbit breed.

Simple ramblings

I have not been posting in quite a long time. Work has me quite busy as well as our new Homestead. We haven't been doing much other than working to improve our small land and keep our pets healthy.

Since acquiring Tres, our lovely gelding horse, we've been working on fattening him a bit. He is a huge horse and eat so much! I have been riding him, too. I believe I will be ready soon to take the certified rider test early next year.

Our rabbits are doing great and are quite healthy. I finally began breeding them this past Sunday. I am hoping that I get my does bred and have litters by early next year. I have been taking my time on breeding since the bunnies were not too cooperative. Also, I have to admit for some time, I was losing my excitement for raising and showing rabbits. Also, when we attended the SARBA Show in October I had a very hard time getting in the groove of things. I kind of forgot about showing, filling out the cards, etc. However, I was excited for our Friends Sasha and John and Dana whom won BOB with their Angoras. they helped us a lot with the showing and reminded us when it was our turn to be judged. It was great competing with our friends and talking and sharing. I still have not downloaded the pictures of the show, but I will soon and post them no later than next week.

One thing I did do, though, was get into a spinning binge. I have been Navajo plying angora and alpaca yarn. I hope to knit something soon.

I plan to begin posting often, too.

ARBA Convention is soon approaching. We had made plans to attend and discussed it with my boys, but I don't know if we can make it, after all. We have had a very busy month at work. I've been going to Conferences in Corpus Christi, Texas and Dallas, Texas. I also have another Conference in Brownsville, Texas, on November 12, and that is putting a damper on plans for Convention. Plus, my parents reside in Brownsville, so it is super good to visit them, too, and get training.

I know several of our friends will be attending this year and we want to wish everyone the best of luck! We hope to see lots of pictures and hear of the great experiences people will have.

This year, we were able to attend the SARBA show, though I have not had time to post pictures, yet. We had a great time visiting with our friends! However, we had to get re-adjusted to showing since we previously missed a whole year of shows.

We did not place as well as we hoped for, but our friends, Sasha and John, won BOB with their English Angoras on Show A & B. Sasha's mother, Dana, showed her Satin Angora Doe and won BOB, too! I will post pictures soon.

We hope to attend the TRBA December show in Killeen, Texas, though we might not show at all since we are eagerly working on reviewing our stock and breeding rabbits. We want to have some rabbits for the coming shows next year, and we have to begin planning and seeing the developments. Hence, no showing, though we want to go see our friends and visit with them.

Floresville Peanut Festival

On June 25th of this year we relocated to our 1 acre lot in Floresville, Texas. We actually reside on the outskirts of Floresville. It is a wonderful place where we have lots of fun, excellent neihbors, quiet and calm atmosphere, and best of all, no restrictions.

We are slowly beginning to get involved in community events and this month we have the Floresville Peanut Festival!

This will be our first year going and hope to have a great time!

Okay, here is my first try at incubating eggs. I have this really cute extra small chicken and rooster that I got free from a lady. She is laying eggs, but not brooding. I decided to try my luck at incubating them since I really like the chicken and rooster. I hope all goes well.

Today was a very hectic day. Too much stuff to deal with at work and having to take Martin for his Accuplacer test to begin his first semester of College. He chose to begin his work at Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Texas. We've been gathering all the required paperwork to enroll him.

Johnny will be enrolled in his new school on Monday and he seems excited. I just hope he doesn't give his teachers problems like he usually does.

I have not posted in quite a long time. After we moved things got hectic with work and home. At work, during summer, we have a strict schedule where the children work on projects and school at home. I was so delighted to work on Equestrian Therapy with the children. I can say I have learned SO much, personally, and have made great strides in accomplishing many goals.

One of my first goals was to face my fear of horses. Well, I am over that fear. This year, I learned to trust and make friends with the horses, learned to groom them, did some ground work, and mount and ride a horse. I am delighted! I am already saving up some money to purchase a horse of my own so that I can continue learning and enjoying these majestic animals.

Martin and Johnny are doing great. Martin is getting ready to start community college and Johnny is ready for his high school year in a new town. They've been so helpful with me in our new "farm" and even made several friends with kids their age in the community.

I have slowly begun to re-build our rabbitry again. We have 3 nicely coated rabbits, but one has a flopped ear, so I cannot show him, but might keep him as his body and wool are developing extremely well. I also have 5 other babies from the same pair I got from Margaret Bartold some time ago. I am hoping to begin showing in September of this year and see how it goes--I can't wait to begin showing once again. The only thing is that I might have to go at it "solo" as Martin and Johnny have other interests (girls) now and don't seem too enthused about rabbits any more. Then again, they might go with me along for the ride, but who knows.

I'll be posting pictures of the rabbits later on future posts. Oh, I almost forgot, I have chickens! Yes, we have a few chickens and am excited. We want to harvest free ranged chicken eggs and will do so within the next few months. The next big purchase will be the horse, hopefully. I wanted to get some sheep, but I have to wait on that. I have far too many plans for our small acre farm, but not enough funds to do it.

We moved!

I am so excited to post that Friday, June 25, 2010, was the huge moving day! We relocated our mobile home to a new unrestricted acre of land. We are exhausted by the move, but excited to have our own little piece of paradise. I have to admit that I just LOVE IT! The air is much cleaner, there is not much noise other than the night crickets and other insects, and the neighbors are superb!

We had a tough day on Friday and, unfortunately, we lost one rabbit due to the stress of the move. Lucky for us the rest of the rabbits and babies are doing well. The temperature is high, but the fans and the a/c is working well for added comfort of rabbits.

I will post pictures once I have them. I will not publish our new address as I am still concerned about our rabbits and our safety. I just am not as trusting as I was before.

I hope to be able to post often once I get settled and relaxed. Only problem is I don't have high speed internet in that area. The cheapest way to get online will be dial-up right now until the subdivision improves with high speed internet services.

All my 16 children gave me a wonderful surprise on Friday. Since our children from work are heading to the Circus on Sunday, they decided to celebrate Fathers Day early for me.

Moving time

We are slowly beginning the moving process. We will be relocating to our new acre next friday and there are so many things to do! I am excited for our "new beginning".
We have been so busy, lately, that I've not been able to post much. However, I hope that once we get to our new location I'll be able to post often, I hope.

Okay, I've been learning Equestrian Therapy, though I do not know how to ride a horse, yet. Thursday was my day for riding Sunny the Horse. Well, it was great using the techniques I've been working on. I see now how difficult it is for the children to control the horse, but it was a great experience.

Martin graduated from High School today, June 4, 2010. We had the best experience ever! I am extremely proud of my son! My lovely mother, Tomasa, has been recovering slowly, but surely. She is demonstrating such strength and will to live and I just love her SO much. It was hard seeing her in her darkest moments, but seeing her now full of live and vitality is such a blessing. She is slowly gaining weight, though she is losing all her hair. She handles it well, though and has a great sense of humor. She continues to undergo dialysis 3 times per week and is such a trooper. I love her so much and I only pray that I have her strength as I grow older.

I am so proud of my son, Martin. He turned 18 on the 20th of May and will be graduating from High School on Friday, June 4, 2010. Words cannot express my excitement. I have been blessed in my life with so many things, but the best is having two wonderful, handsome sons that always keep me going. I don't know what my life would have been with out these two "piggies"--as I lovingly call them. They are truly the apple of my eyes.

We celebrated the events with my parents down the Rio Grande Valley. I was so excited to see my mother doing better and in good spirits. Martin received lots of gifts from his tias (Blanca, Rosie, Lupita, Delmit and Bengie) and as you can see by his huge smile, he was having an awesome time!

A wonderful new beginning for us...

On Friday, April 16, 2010, as I was about to leave for work I checked the nest box and found 3 chubby round babies! Our Opal doe that we got from Margaret Bartold is a wonderful mother.

I had to leave to the Parelli Conference, but kept in contact with my sons via telephone as they checked on the babies. Okay, I'm SO excited that I can hardly contain myself!

We also are looking to move to our acre by end of May so we are already looking into plans for our new rabbit barn.

The training was such an exciting opportunity to see the way they work with Horses. I am learning how to use Equestrian Therapy to work with children. Just a quick update on things with our family

As you all know, I've been posting many things that have been going on with our family, lately. Last year in October we had a tough situation due to things that happened to our Rabbitry. In November my mother underwent a triple heart bypass and has been hospitalized since. In February she was admitted to a rehab. hospital and on the day of her discharge to return home she had an aneurism, which affected both hemispheres of the brain. Since then she has had some problems regressing and completely appearing to be in a comotose phase and then the next day she will "wake up" and be normal as can be. This is tough, but we are glad to still have her here. We've been visiting her often and praying a lot and the Good Lord is still answering our prayers.

We also have had some good things happen to us. We acquired the two rabbits that will help us re-build our rabbitry. We also gave a down payment on a one acre tract of land with no restrictions! Yes, we are excited as we will soon move to the country side and be able to raise not only our angora rabbits, but also chickens, sheep and goat and we will see what else we can get. I've also changed my diet and am eating healthy so I've been losing weight, toning up, and feel good. To top it off, the best thing was that I had to take the Texas Exam for Child Care Administrator License and well, I passed with flying colors! Now, we just wait so that the board of Directors where I work promote me to run the operation.

I am just ecstatic about the positive things that are happening for us and the great blessings we are receiving.

On a separate note, I have not yet bred our rabbits, but hope to do so this coming weekend. Hopefully, we will have some litters soon.

Overall, having friends in the "rabbit world" has been the best part of it all.

New Beginnings for us

I just returned from a quick trip to Missouri. I met my great friend, Margaret Bartold, where I picked up 3 English Angoras. We got a pair from Margaret and the other rabbit, a buck, was picked up for our friend, Jennie from Austin, Texas. We are so excited to get an excellent buck, which is our Herd sire. We believe we will be able to get nice babies soon and continue our comeback.

I will be posting pictures soon. For now, the pair is resting in their cages and absorbing the new environment. The trip back from Missouri was a tough one. There was torrential rains, which continued through Oklahoma and a little bit into Dallas. Though it was a tough trip, I enjoyed it as it gave me time to think a lot and focus on our goals and blessings.

On a separate topic, my mother is slowly recovering and getting stronger. She is walking with help and strengthening day by day. She will soon be moved to the rehabiliation clinic and then transitioned home. She is so alert and chattery, like before. She is finally coming out of the whole ordeal.

What can I say? We firmly believe the good Lord is blessing us with wonderful opportunities and excellent friends. We thank you all, our "rabbit world" friends for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers and for being ther for us when we've needed it the most!

Update on our lives

The good news for our family is that my mother, Tomasa, grandmother to my sons, Martin and Johnny, is doing a lot better. She finally was moved out of the ICU unit yesterday and she was sent to the rehabilitation center. We are so excited with such great news. My mother is now eating well, and will begin her rehabilitation work so she can be released home soon. She, unfortunately, will have to undergo dialysis from now on. However, her heart is strong and we have high hopes she will soon be back to her former self.

We want to Thank all our friends for your prayers and good thoughts.

In reference to our rabbitry. Well, we will soon be getting some rabbits and hope to quickly begin the breeding program and re-establish ourselves. Things are slowly getting better for us and we are as excited as ever to go to shows.
I was able to go last month to our SARBA meeting as now I'm a Director, and I plan to help out as much as I can. If we do not have rabbits to show in the next show, we definitely plan to continue our help our club and meeting our great friends.

I have been doing a little bit of spinning and hope to begin knitting again. I had stopped working on many things I enjoy due to things affecting our lives.

Aside from that there is nothing else going on aside from the San Antonio weather. Yes, we have had tough weather issues, lately. It either rains, get cold, then it is sunny and muggy and a bit hot, but overall, the allergies due to mountain cedar, pollen, and other things in the air are tough to bear.

I'll be posting pictures soon and hope to begin blogging often as I've neglected the blog for quite some time.

Our family needs LOTS of Prayers

As you all know, we've been plagued with many tough trials and we firmly believe our prayers and that of our friends and family has helped us be strong.

My mother, Tomasa (Tomy) Gonzalez, has been hospitalized since November 2009. She had to undergo a triple heart bypass and since has been in the ICU. She had complication from the surgery and at one point her heart stopped, but the Grace of God is such that she was able to return to us. She had lots of internal bleeding, which began flowing externally due to a ruptured ulcer. The ulcer is healing and her heart is strong. She is slowly beginning her "eating therapy", yes, she had not been allowed to eat for several weeks.

Now, when things were looking a bit better, well, she got a huge swelling on her lower leg due to the IV needle being attached since she has been hospitalized. The doctors did MRIs and other sonograms and the good thing is that the swelling is not infected, but unfortunately, it is painful and my mother has been enduring extreme pulsating pain. It is difficult seeing and listening to her scream and cry in pain and agony and being unable to do anything, but be there for her and pray.

I am asking that all our friends please pray for my mother for a speedy recovery a healing.

It is so difficult for me seeing my mother going through this experience, but it is harder seeing my sons feeling overwhelmed to see their grandmother in this way, too.

Thank you for letting me share this family experience and for your prayers.

Moving forward

We would like to thank all our friends for your support and prayers. We still have no leads on the culprits that attacked our rabbits. However, we have decided that we need to move forward and begin our slow process at rebuilding our angora herd. We are estimating at least one year till we get back to our competitive edge once again.

On behalf of our family, I want to thank each and every one of you that have offered us so much support and prayers during this difficult time.

I have to mention that when this horrible crime happened to us, part of me just wanted to run away from this situation—make it go away. I felt distraught, angry, frustrated, and lost. However, when all looked bleak for us so many friends came along and offered their support, condolences and donations.

People from different States contacted us and demonstrated that as rabbit owners/breeders, we are a united family and stand by each other during times of need. This support helped our family find the strength to go on and not let these criminals take the best of us. They took our beloved rabbits, but we will not let them take our spirit, too.

I am overwhelmed with emotions to see such wonderful caring individuals. Our good friend, Brandy, from BunnyBees Rabbitry and her family have been so helpful. They are opening a bank account where donations to cover the Veterinary Expenses can be made. She and her mother offered to help us fix up the shed and cages. In addition, Brandy and Our family were contacted by breeders offering to give us some angora rabbits and lion head to continue showing and re-build our herd.

All this kindness is enough to melt the toughest of hearts. It has helped me demonstrate to my sons that people care for what happens to others and good triumphs over evil. I know that this demonstration of solidarity is helping my son, Johnny, who witnessed that horrible scene, realize that people care what happens to animals and people in general, and can empathize with our grief.

Thank you so much for everything each and every one of you has done for us. Your kind words offer us solace. Your generous heart provides us with hope and your prayers give us strength to go on.

Senseless Crime

While I was on a week-long vacation, my son, Johnny, was in care of my sister, Lupita. During the week he returned home after school and cared for the rabbits as he waited to be picked up by my sister. Everything was normal, like it has always been at our home. However, on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at approximately 3:30 or so in the a.m., under the cover of darkness, our home was invaded by unscrupulous criminal minded individuals.

These individuals, without regard for life, savagely attacked and murdered most of our rabbits and trashed our rabbit shed and cages. My son, Johnny, came home on Saturday afternoon to find the most disturbing scene he has seen in his life. He could hardly find words to describe what he saw. He quickly called my sister, Lupita, whom upon seeing the horrific scene immediately called the police and the News Media.

I do not want to graphically describe the massacre. Suffice to say that some individuals--human beings, whom are either plain evil or totally disturbed, viciously attacked and murdered several defenseless and docile rabbits without provocation.

We can hardly begin to comprehend the disturbing actions of these individuals. We are praying that the News Media helps us encourage any witnesses to come forward with any information about these individuals so that they can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and get psychotherapeutic treatment. Research shows that people who engage in animal cruelty, eventually graduate to cruelty towards humans.

Our family is very distraught and frightened by this occurrence. We are praying this crime does not go unpunished.

Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts. I am hoping these unscrupulous individuals know that they did not only murder rabbits—they murdered pets, beloved family members that also assisted me in my professional employment as a Counselor. These rabbits were my assistants in providing therapeutic treatment to children and adolescents in a residential setting.

We are mourning the loss of the following loving pets:
English Angora:
Jack – Buck (He won his 3rd Champion Leg at the SARBA show on 10/17/09. He will never be able to receive his Grand Champion Certificate).
Frida – Doe (She competed well at SARBA show and got great remarks. She fought the good fight and was at the Veterinarian where I had to make the difficult choice of having her euthanized per Veterinarian’s recommendation).
Rigoberta – Doe (Very promising Show bunny that got excellent remarks from the Judges. We will not know her fullest potential now).
Curiosity – Doe (Tough beautiful rabbit that stole the hearts of many people for her courage and zest for life).
Giant Hybrid Angora:
Soledad – Doe (Beautiful black Giant Hybrid that was as sweet as honey. She provided so much wool for spinning and some great babies that went to loving homes).
LionHead:
Un-named – Doe (My son, Johnny, won her at the raffle table. He wanted to breed her to his buck Lionhead, but he won’t be able to now).

One mixed rabbit that was being patiently trained to assist me in my therapeutic work.

Overall, we are blessed to still have Diego and Ruffles, our two English Angoras. In addition, we have Johnny’s Thrianta pair and his Lionhead.

Right now, we have no specific plans as to what to do. This horrific event has shocked our world and sense of security and safety. We may still Show rabbits, breed them and use them as therapeutic assistants, but for now, our future is uncertain as we will have to pick up the pieces and begin the road to recovery from the trauma that unscrupulous criminal minded people have caused our family and friends.

Thank you all that have called and emailed us offering support in out time of need. Please excuse that we might not post much on the blog the days to come, due to this traumatic experience.

SARBA Show in Seguin, Texas

We had a wonderful time at the SARBA show in Seguin, Texas. I will be posting pictures of the show soon.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to post anything since we are leaving for a week-long vacation. Hence, I will not be able to update the blog until my return on 10/25/09. The next posting will be on Monday 10/26/09.

I'm going on a Cruise to the Mexican Riviera, where, unfortunately, Hurricane Rick is threatening to hit some time next week close or in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico. Although our cruise ship has assured us that we will avoid the bad weather we will need your prayers.

A friendly reminder to all Texas breeders. We are having the San Antonio Rabbit Breeders Association Show in Seguin, Texas, this coming Saturday, October 17, 2009.

The weather is looking great, though a bit humid. However, this show will be a great one. Looking forward to seeing everyone compete or simply visit with friends.

One of the best parts of showing is not to just show and compete, but to get to know the familiar faces of fun-loving breeders that are eager to talk and share their experience with their rabbit breeds. We always enjoy seeing our friends and making new ones. I don't see the Shows being as special as it is if it weren't for the camaraderie from everyone that participates and visits the show grounds.

So come on and have a great time! Also, visit the Raffle Table and support our Club!

More rain

The weather in San Antonio, Texas, has been muggy and humid. We've received so much rain that the Water Utility Company has lifted part of the ban on watering due to the aquifer level rising.

I just love this weather, it is cool, breezy, and wet. However, what I do not like is the fact that people still drive so fast in this weather causing accidents.

Our rabbits, well, they are enjoying the cool weather, but I don't know about the humidity. They are still looking good and happy, but we keep a daily watch on them as much as we can to insure they are safe, happy, and dry.

The interesting thing on the weather is that it is forcasted that we will return to sunny days starting Friday. Let's see how that goes.

Defensive Drivnig Class

Today was a sad day for me. I had to take a Defensive Driving Class and will have to sit for 6 hours listening to an instructor about my mistake and how I could have avoided it. Well, that is the consequences I get for choosing to speed 3 months ago and then procrastinating to take the class!

Delilah had her babies

On Thursday, October 08, 2009, around 6:30am, Delilah gave birth to 5 healthy chubby babies! We were so excited, but I was a bit upset since Johnny let Delilah sleep on his bed and she gave birth there.

We will keep one puppy and give the others. We already have the rest spoken for, but then again, we will see what happens.

Cotton Knit Towel finally finished!

Okay, I had previously posted on this "Bull Dog Face" Towel. It turns out that the huge towel was the Bull Dog Face AND body. I think that the dog looks more like a Boxer, but then again, I have to check it out.

It took me a while to finish it as you can see how large it is. The color is awesome, but the figure doesn't "pop out" like I'd like it to. However, once you see it live it is better than the pictures. I don't know if I will give it to my friend, Belle, or keep it. Would I knit another like this? I don't know as it was tough working on it!

Cotton Towel Knit

I've been knitting this huge cotton towel for quite some time now. It is supposed to show off a "bull dog" face/body. The towel is coming out great; however, the colorful pattern does not show off the silhouette of the dog fully.

Either way, it is looking great. I wanted to donate it to a great friend of mine, but I might keep it since it has given me quite some tough time to finish.

I am finally feeling a bit better. I never fully got the flu, but did get the symptoms. It was horrible. I'm finally over it and the congestion is leaving my body, too. Everything is still a blurr from the past few days. I need to get better y tomorrow and clean up the house and rabbit shed.

yes, feeling ill gets me mischievous. I took self pictures and well, they came out horrible! I felt even worse when I saw my "double chin"! LOL I saw this and remembered a good friend of mine's words, "I used to be beautiful"! Yes, that was Allison when she underwent so much stress at work. Now, this is me. LOL
I keep thinking about exercising, but feeling ill I cannot do much but sit around moping and trying to recoup my energy.

This is Jack. I took the picture at night when he was having problems breathing. I tried to get a picture closeup of the clogged nostrils, but was unable to. He came out good, despite having problems breathing. He is doing good now.

Been neglecting the blog

These past few days have been hectic. I began a new job and have been working with many kids so it has been a great experience. The only setback is that I got a bit ill. I recently took the flu shot and that has helped me tremendously. However, I managed to pick up some strep from the schools. I've been attending ARDs and other meetings with the children as an advocate, but I just never thought I'd get ill like this.

I started feeling ill on Wednesday and by Thursday, well, the body aches were so bad. Good thing is I had some Amoxicillin I had bought in Mexico during a recent trip. This has helped my immune system, but I still am a bit weak. Needless to say, I didn't have much time to write and post on the blog.

Through out this "daze", we almost lost Jack, our cute Angora to issues with possibly snuffles. I had not had the energy to blow the coats or be with the rabbits, so Johnny helped me out. He said the rabbits were all doing great, but on Saturday, he noticed that Jack was not moving much and he is very rambunctious. Well, I finally got off my couch and went to check on the rabbits. I saw Jack not moving much and with droopy eyes. Before anything, I took him out and used a stethoscope to hear his heart beat and respiratory system. Well, he had this horrible wheezing sound when breathing. I was not sure what to think and it was late to take him to the Vet. I checked him more carefully and saw that his nose was almost clogged up with some hair and mucus. Poor baby was not breathing and was suffocating. I quickly used some saline solution and a warm moist towelette and cleaned his nose. It was a bit tough as the mucus and hair was really stuck. I had to use some small scissors and i managed to clip off the "clog" and then utilized more saline solution to clean the nostrils. He quickly stopped wheezing and his heart beat got back to a normal rhythm.

I kept going back during the night to check up on him and he was doing well. Today, he was bouncing up a bit, eating well and drinking lots of fluids. I cleaned his nostrils again, but he did not have discharge like last night. right now, I checked on him and he is looking great. However, we still will take him to the Exotics Vet on Wednesday for his check-up as we do not want to take any chances.

So many things happen when one gets ill!

Being Lazy

Okay, I've been feeling lazy lately. I have not had time to knit or spin since I've been taking some time for personal rejuvenation. I changed jobs, well, am working on my own private practice again so it is taking a bit of my time and I've just been plain ol' lazy to take pictures to add to the blog.

On a good note, we've been having really good rainfall! Yes, we used to have lots of hot weather, but now, it is nice cool and moist! Thus far, the rabbits coats are growing and looking good. Though I have to admit, the regular grooming is a must due to the moist from the rain.

I'll be taking pictures tomorrow of some items I've been knitting and maybe of our rabbits, as they continue being prepared for the upcoming show this weekend. I am having second thoughts, though about going to the show as driving 4 hours does not sound too appealing. We will see.

I baked a nice moist yellow cake for dessert. I let the boys pick the icing and since they chose chocolate, again, I decided to add a twist to the chocolate. I spread some strawberry marmalade and mixed it with the chocolate icing and the taste was totally awesome! The taste was a refreshing with a nice punch of sweet/sour. Needless to say, the cake was eaten in less than one hour!

Finally, my traditional Mexican Dish

Okay, the boys and I wanted to eat a traditional Mexican plate, "Arroz con Mole".

Here you can see the traditional Mexican rice. Notice Mexican rice is not mushy or sticky. The spices give it all the flavor it needs. Only regret in this dish is that I did not use the chicken broth to cook it, pity, it would've given the rice an extra punch with the taste of the chicken.

Mole, yum! Some people believe that Mole paste is "dried animal blood". No, it isn't. It is a paste made with chile and other ingredients. The paste is dissolved in the chicken broth when it is very hot. Then, one adds the chicken to the Mole and voila!

I don't like to add the full chicken bones and meat. I like to let the chicken cook long enough that the meat falls off easily. The boys like it this way, too, as it is easier to eat and less messy.

Messin' with Martin

My sons and I have been moving things around so that we can steam clean the carpet. I bought a new carpet cleaner, which is really cool. While Martin was in the room, Johnny and I decided to play a trick on him.

After emptying the box Johnny got inside it ...

I closed the box and called Martin asking him to take the box outside next to the trash can...

Unsuspecting Martin picked up the box and it was quite heavy for an empty box! As he picked it up, Johnny got scared he was going to be dropped and tried to get out and yelled, "Surprise"!

Ha ha, we all had a great laugh at the prank we pulled on Martin.

Martin didn't want to let Johnny out of the box as he got duped.

And.....this is the way we have fun at home.

A deer running happy

As I looked out the window in my office I saw this cute little deer running across the front of the building. It is such a great sight. However, as luck will have it, the batteries in my camera went dead. I was able to get this awesome picture, but I was not able to get the other deer that kept starring at me while I was taking the picture.

Weather is better in San Antonio

The weather has been really nice, lately. We should continue to enjoy this wonderful weather for the rest of the week and, hopefully, month!

The rabbits are more relaxed and happier. I've not used the A/C as much as during the summer months, but the fans still work at their pace helping circulate the air in the Rabbit Shed.

We've also had lots of rain, which is wonderful! Let's see how the weather continues to change for the better.

Patrick Swayze, 1952-2009

It is so sad to hear that the actor, Patrick Swayze, died from pancreatic cancer. We love the movie Dirty Dancing and Ghost, which I believe are the most popular and awesome movies he starred on--well, not to leave out "The Outsiders".

Such a sad loss.

Party for the Twins

We had a wonderful time down the Valley visiting family. So many activities to partake, but one of the best was the birthday party for the Twins, Stephanie and Samantha. The only thing that bothered me was that the boys ended up skateboarding on the street with their cousins, so they missed the pictures.

On September 11, 2001, a horrible tragedy hit the USA. It was a scary ordeal from which ordinary people became heroes.

I still remember that day clearly when I awoke to the news of our Nation being under attack. The fear I felt was real and unmeasurable. Just the past weekend, 9/6-8/01, my sister and I, were in Chicago, IL, attending my nephews graduation from the Naval Academy. We visited several places in Chicago and had a great time. However, on the date of our flights, my sister and I, were scheduled on the same flight home. Unfortunately, due to chance or something else, we had to be separated from our destination to Houston, Texas, whereby we would each depart to Brownsville, Texas and El Paso, Texas.

My sister was allowed to go on the same flight, while I had to board a different American Airline flight.
I still remember feeling that something was wrong since my flight got cancelled 3 times and then I finally flew to El Paso in the wee hours of the morning on 9/9/01 through American Airlines.

I wondered the peculiarity of the flight cancellations, but thought nothing much of it. However, 2 days later I awoke to the frantic telephone call from my sister telling me to turn on the TV. My heart sank as I saw what was happening and the devastation it caused.

I quickly got dressed and went to work at the Child Guidance Counseling Center, in El Paso, Texas, and we were all in shock and awed as the news kept pouring. Some clients cancelled, others came in panic, it was a tough ordeal. However, in the midst of chaos this country banded together in solidarity and ordinary people became heroes. We lost so many lives of children, women, and men, but all through this our Nation prevailed.

Nothing, not even the disturbing attempts by ignorant and hateful individuals will ever kill the American Spirit!

Till this date, I still have problems watching at the twin towers collapsing and the other videos of the attack. I keep thinking of the people that died not knowing what happened and the despair of those that survived. Overall, I remain in awe and admiration for the ones that without fear or hesitation ran into buildings to save people, only to be received by the hand of death. Those fallen heroes and all that gave their lives deserve the best remembrance ever as their blood was not shed in vane. Their blood shed did not destroy, but instead, invigorated this nation of ours!

Diego goes to work, Part 2

This is part two of the pictures taken when Diego was at work. I had to darken all the faces of the children and the staff due to confidentiality reasons.

I just have to say that this experience was a rewarding one for me and the children. I wish you could see the expressions on the angelic faces as Diego hopped around and flirted with all the children and staff. He seemed to notice he was the center of attention and he truly worked it!

In the past, I've taken Delilah, our Chihuahua bitch to work with some teen-agers and they loved her. However, she is a bit too rambunctious for these children so Diego was a great source of help during the group meeting.

Diego goes to work! Yes, I decided to take Diego to work with me. I've been telling the children about our awesome rabbits and they wanted to meet one of them. After receiving constant requests by the kids to see a rabbit, Diego came to save the day.

The children I work with have special needs, but are awesome in their own ways. They love people, animals, and they love life! They were extremely enthused and excited to see Diego.
The children were able to keep their attention focused on the information of how Diego flew to San Antonio, Texas, all the way from Canada! Yes, they loved the story about how we waited patiently for him and the show experience.

There were many questions as to what kind of food Diego eats, as well as his favorite treats. Of course, I took the opportunity to share that Diego loves to eat healthy, not too many treats or his teeth will require Dentist intervention (grin), yes, I had to help them understand the importance of hygiene. Of course, we discussed how Diego receives his grooming and blowing of his coat in order to keep it nice and soft.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience for the children and Diego. I will post more pictures tomorrow and continue sharing Diego's awesome work experience.

These past few weeks have been a bit tough. Many things surfaced at work and new plans for our family are occurring. The fun part for me is that I've been knitting along these tough times. Knitting is a source of relaxation, invigoration and rejuvenation. Well, spinning, is, too, as well as playing with the rabbits! :)

I've been participating in our KAL and am working on a cotton towel with a bull dog picture in it. Well, I hope it is coming out good. I will take a picture of the work in progress tonight. Thus far, I have the legs completed!

This past weekend our family went to the Rio Grande Valley and we visited my parents and sisters. We had a wonderful time. Pictures of that will also be posted on the blog along with a very special segment I want to share with you all. The segment is "Diego goes to work". Yes, Diego, our English Angora that we acquired some time ago from Bumblebeary's English Angoras, went to work and boy did he make a splash! Kids and adults loved him! I plan to take him back again soon.

Hopefully, with the new prospectives coming along for our family I will not neglect our blog.

Allergies Galore!

Ugh, San Antonio weather has turned on me! Although the weather has been really nice, lately, the mold and other allergens are extremely tough and many people, myself included have been having a tough time dealing with the allergies.

The good thing is that the temperatures have been quite bearable and pretty nice for the rabbits. We've been grooming and blowing coats and excited September finally arrived. Summer is finally over! Well, here in San Antonio, Texas, the summer tends to linger at times up till October! :)
